A new 2020 Subaru WRX Club Spec Limited Edition has been announced by Subaru Australia and will arrive in dealerships in a matter of weeks.
As the current Subaru WRX heads into its twilight after six years on sale, this special-edition kicks off farewell celebrations for the fourth-generation Japanese performance sedan launched in 2014.
Limited to just 150 units, the 2020 Subaru WRX Club Spec starts at $47,990 (manual) and costs $50,490 in CVT automatic form.
The most affordable Subaru WRX is currently priced at $40,490.
Subaru reckons the WRX Club Spec limited-edition “may be the most sought-after WRX yet”, but what do you get for your extra $7500?
Although there are no changes to the WRX’s iconic 2.0-litre turbo-boxer four-cylinder engine, which continues to bang out a respectable 197kW/350Nm, the new model gets the Brembo brake package from its muscled-up WRX STI cousin.
But there’s a catch – only manual versions of the special-edition Rex get the pumped-up brakes.
Other exterior extras include 18-inch STI alloy wheels and matt-black rear badges, along with Crystal Black wing mirrors, a rear lip spoiler and shark-fin antenna.
Three paint jobs are available: Crystal Black Silica, Crystal White Pearl and WR Blue.
Inside, the WRX Club Spec gets a carbon-look instrument panel, Recaro sports bucket seats and an Ultrasuede STI steering wheel to add a little more tactile intrigue.
An eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with subwoofer and amplifier is fitted as well.
The fourth-generation Subaru WRX will be remembered for being one of the most handsome in the family tree – and certainly less polarising than the second-gen ‘bug eye’ and 'blob eye' WRXs.
Subaru Australia is likely to offer one or two more special-edition WRXs before the highly-anticipated new model lands next year.
Indeed, when the fifth-generation Subaru WRX is revealed in April 2021, it will bring with it an all-new horizontally-opposed (aka boxer) four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It’s not yet clear how big the next Subaru WRX’s engine will be, but there is talk of a 1.6-litre turbo that would allow it to once again compete in the World Rally Championship.
The hard-core Subaru WRX STI will arrive in early 2022 and will be the most powerful ever, sporting a beefed-up 2.4-litre turbo boxer engine that could blast out up to 300kW.
