Mazda appears to be one step closer to launching a second sports car after being caught registering a trademark for the 'Mazda MX-6' name with the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) on October 16.
According to
, which discovered the trademark application, the born-again Mazda MX-6 moniker could be applied to a new sports coupe directly inspired by the 2015 RX-VISION Concept (pictured).Adding to the credibility of a comeback for the MX-6 name is the recent declaration by Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto, who said he wants his company to build a production version of the RX-VISION.
“At first I must say that RX-VISION is a vision model for design development, so we didn’t assume mass production, but I want to have one,” he told carsales.com.au.
Ruling out a pure-electric powertrain for any production version of the RX-VISION, Marumoto-san said:
“I don’t want to make such car — I prefer the smell of gasoline! It’s a sports car, right? EV can be considered as a commuter but not in this situation,” he stated.
Mazda produced two generations of MX-6 coupes between 1987 and 1997.
Although they failed to win either the critical acclaim or cult following of the MX-5, the sleek front-wheel drive coupes offered some interesting technical innovations including electrically-controlled four-wheel steering and three-way electronically adjustable suspension.
There are still hopes Mazda will release a rotary-powered sports coupe like the RX-VISION concept in 2020 -- Mazda's centenary year. If so, it could be revealed at the 2019 Tokyo motor show next October.
