Any doubts US pick-up truck fans wouldn’t embrace electrification have been banished with all examples of the $150,000-plus GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 built out to the end of 2022 reserved within 10 minutes of its reveal.
Now all those punters just have to wait a minimum 12 months to get their hands on their vehicle.
If they impatiently fall out of line then GMC says there are already thousands of people queued up on a wait list to get their hands on a vehicle it dubs both a “supertruck” and an off-road “beast”.
And with all 2022 Edition 1s accounted for, anyone who has not already put their $US100 down is looking at sometime late in 2022 before driving out of a showroom in a Hummer EV.
That’s when lesser Hummer EVs start being launched, led by the 3X – still $140,000 Aussie! GMC is also taking deposits on these models.
“We had an incredible response last night, in terms of the people viewing, the number of people visiting the site, the number of people searching on Google,” GMC vice-president Duncan Aldred said in an investor call.
Aldred also revealed about half of GMC’s dealers have agreed to sell the Hummer EV so far and that it would come with no-haggle pricing.
Dealers won’t be allowed to inflate or reduce the price and there will be none of the incentives that often knock thousands of dollars off the price.
The Hummer EV got the best possible debut as it was launched in prime time on Tuesday night in the US during the first game of the baseball world series.
While the Tesla Cybertruck has had a huge response in the US and the EV specialist is building a new factory in Texas to manufacture it, the GMC Hummer EV is the first electrified full-size truck from one of the legacy brands that has dominated the massive US ICE-powered full-size truck market.
More are coming though, with an electrified Ford F-150 due in 2022 and General Motors also planning a Chevrolet based on the same proprietary Ultium technology as the Hummer.
By the way, there are no signs of the GMC Hummer EV coming to Australia as part of the GMSV line-up. Judging by US demand alone, that’s understandable.
“We are glad there is so much excitement around the GMC Hummer EV,” a GMSV spokesman said in a statement.
“It is another vehicle in the General Motors line-up that demonstrates our vision of an all-electric future. We are not making announcements at this stage in relation to global markets outside of North America.”
