VIDEO: JLR and Ford join forces to develop self-driving tech

JLR and Tata teams up with old parent company to fast-track autonomous driving technology

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Ford have announced that both car-makers will once again work together to develop new autonomous and connected technologies.

The first technology demonstrated in the short film is the car-makers' new Advanced Highway Assist that features an auto-overtake function.

The next is a new system that can communicate with a city's infrastructure to help the car calculate when traffic lights are about to change. This means the car can suggest slowing early when it detects a red light is coming to avoid spending less time at standstill.

The final system is called Electronic Emergency Brake Light Assist and sees car-to-car-communication warn the car travelling behind if the car in front is heavily braking.

The advantage of the system, that can work at distances of up to 500m, is that it works in conditions of limited visibility, like fog or if the van in front obscures the view of heavily braking traffic.

All technologies will reach trial stage next year before going on sale, in production vehicles, in 2018.
